Nissan, Uber, and UK startup Wayve will launch a self-driving taxi pilot program in Tokyo by late 2026, using electric vehicles equipped with automated systems.

Strategic Autonomous Partnership In Asia

The automotive manufacturer Nissan Motor, the ride-hailing giant Uber Technologies, and the United Kingdom based artificial intelligence firm Wayve are joining forces to establish an automated transportation network. The three entities confirmed their collaborative efforts on Thursday, detailing their intention to initiate a specialized passenger transport pilot program. This operation is scheduled to commence in the metropolitan area of Tokyo towards the end of the calendar year 2026. This initiative marks a significant development in the commercial application of driverless technologies within the Asian market.

Operational Framework And Technology Integration

This upcoming project represents the first formal venture into autonomous vehicular services for Uber within the nation of Japan. According to the joint communication released by the involved organizations, the operational fleet will primarily consist of Nissan Leaf battery electric vehicles. These specific automobiles will be heavily modified and integrated with the proprietary autonomous navigation software developed by Wayve. Once fully equipped and rigorously tested, these advanced vehicles will become accessible to the general public through the standard Uber digital application. Passengers in Tokyo will be able to request these specialized rides just as they would a conventional taxi service.

Safety Protocols And Testing Phases

Corporate leadership emphasized that rigorous safety measures remain the primary focus of this commercial rollout. Alex Kendall, the Chief Executive Officer of Wayve, indicated that his engineering teams have been conducting extensive field evaluations of their navigation software across various regions of Japan since the beginning of 2025. He noted that aligning with established corporate entities like Uber and Nissan provides a structured and secure pathway to deploy their automated systems to the public responsibly. During the initial rollout phase, the specialized Nissan Leaf units will not operate entirely unattended. A trained safety operator will be present inside the cabin of every active vehicle, ensuring continuous oversight while the cars navigate the dense urban environment of Tokyo. The commercial service will be managed in conjunction with a fully licensed local taxi operator in Japan.

Future Expansion And Market Reach

The scope of this trilateral agreement may soon extend beyond the borders of Japan. Ivan Espinosa, the Chief Executive Officer of Nissan, informed the press that the executive boards of the respective corporations are actively engaged in dialogues regarding potential international expansion. The successful execution of the Tokyo pilot could serve as a foundational model for similar operations in other global financial centers. This aligns with the broader strategic goals of Wayve, which secured substantial financial backing from prominent technology investors including SoftBank and Nvidia.

Broader Industry Context And Timelines

The collaboration builds upon a pre-existing relationship established between Wayve and Uber in August 2024. The long-term objective of their initial pact involves the deployment of driverless transport services across a minimum of ten major urban centers internationally. One of the first targeted locations for this broader rollout includes London, with operations anticipated to begin later this current year. Furthermore, Nissan has been proactively developing its own internal capabilities in this sector. During the previous September, the automaker disclosed that it had commenced independent evaluations of an advanced driver-assistance framework powered by the core technology provided by Wayve. This internal testing is a crucial precursor to the company’s broader objective of introducing fully integrated automated driving features to the consumer market in Japan by the financial year 2027.
