Embracing the belief that electric bikes can transform the world, shared electric bike operator Tripy participated in the "Connect4Mobility" event, themed "Inclusive and Accessible Urban Mobility." The event, held at the IzQ Innovation Center in Izmir, marks the fourth edition of the EIT Urban Mobility RIS Hub Turkey initiative, coordinated by Fark Labs in partnership with Sabanci University and supported by the EIT Urban Mobility.
Ali Onuralp Unal, General Manager of Tripy, emphasized the company's mission to position bicycle transportation as a more effective mode of urban travel. "We embarked on this journey with MIA Technology, believing in the potential of electric bikes to change the world," he stated. Tripy, a shared vehicle platform, was established 1.5 years ago, merging a team educated in the United States and Canada with MIA Technology. Unal highlighted that Tripy has quickly become one of Turkey's fastest-growing mobility companies, with a presence in many cities across the country. MIA Technology, the largest investor in Tripy, is one of Turkey's major tech firms listed on the Borsa Istanbul, trading in the BIST50. "We believe in the transformative power of electric bikes, and that's why we started this venture with MIA Technology," Unal added.
Tripy is not only focused on operating electric bikes but also invests heavily in efficient and rapid charging solutions for electric vehicles. "We have established over 50 fast and slow electric vehicle charging stations across Turkey," Unal noted. Tripy collaborates with municipalities in Sakarya, Eskisehir, Bursa, and Izmir to develop electric bike infrastructure through long-term contracts. "In Izmir and Eskisehir, you can find thousands of our bikes on the streets, promoting a new perspective on urban transportation," Unal said.
Unal also addressed the need to shift the urban focus from cars to more sustainable modes of transport. "Our cities are designed around cars, not people. We must challenge the notion that cars have a greater right to public spaces than humans," he asserted. He stressed the importance of altering this mindset and promoting bike infrastructure. "In the future, we envision cities where bicycles play a central role," he added.
Providing statistical insights, Unal shared data from Tripy's operations. In Eskisehir, Tripy helps reduce traffic congestion by 4.4% during peak hours between 17:00 and 19:00, contributing to an annual public health savings of approximately $1 million. "The annual cost of traffic congestion in Istanbul is 20 billion TL. Even a 1% reduction, achievable with bikes, could save the public 100 million TL annually," Unal explained, citing Netherlands' post-pandemic investment in bike infrastructure, which led to substantial public health savings. "These figures demonstrate the significant impact of electric bikes on urban life," Unal concluded.
Ahu Serter, Founder of Arya Women Investment Platform and Fark Labs, praised the success of the Connect4Mobility event in bringing together stakeholders in Izmir. "Startups, municipalities, and individuals from various backgrounds have come together to share and build common visions," she said.
Serter highlighted Tripy's contribution to urban mobility, stating, "Electric bikes will allow cities to breathe, reduce obesity issues, and lower our carbon footprint. With Tripy, the potential for growth and impact is enormous. We aim to expand not just in Turkey, but also in Europe and the United States."
The event underscored the transformative potential of electric bikes in reshaping urban transportation and fostering sustainable, healthy, and accessible cities. Tripy, as a young and innovative company, is poised to play a significant role in this transition, backed by its strong belief in the power of electric mobility.
