Stellantis has announced an additional $55 million investment in Archer Aviation Inc, the developer of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. This move follows a successful test flight last month, and Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares stated, "This investment extends the mobility freedom of today into a future that reaches beyond the roads."
The new funding is part of a strategic financing agreement between the two companies. It builds on Stellantis' previous investment in Archer, which included the purchase of $39 million in Archer shares from the open market earlier this year and a $110 million investment made in 2023 through a combination of open market share purchases and direct investments.
This latest round of investment hinges on the March announcement by Stellantis about acquiring 8.3 million public shares of Archer. In 2023, Stellantis had already committed $110 million to Archer through a blend of strategic public market share acquisitions and other investments under their strategic financing agreement.
Archer continues its work on constructing a high-volume production facility in the United States. The facility is designed to have an annual production capacity of up to 650 aircraft and will occupy a 100-acre site, with a 350,000-square-foot plant as its centerpiece. Archer aims to leverage Stellantis' expertise in contract manufacturing to support its planned commercial expansion through this factory.
Archer and Stellantis have been strategic partners since 2020, with Stellantis investing in Archer since 2021. Throughout this period, Archer has benefited from Stellantis' extensive manufacturing, supply chain, and design expertise to design, develop, and commercialize its eVTOL aircraft.
Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis, commented, "I congratulate the engineering and production teams of both Stellantis and Archer for their innovative approaches, expertise, and dedication. With this additional investment, we continue to advance the freedom of mobility of today towards a future that reaches beyond the roads." Archer CEO Adam Goldstein echoed this sentiment, stating, "Together, we are redefining urban mobility, opening new doors of opportunity by providing more efficient access to people, places, and events in the areas where they live."
Archer is progressing with the construction of its U.S. manufacturing plant, which is expected to significantly boost its production capacity. The facility, spanning over 100 acres with a 350,000-square-foot manufacturing plant, aims to produce up to 650 aircraft annually. Archer intends to utilize Stellantis' contract manufacturing expertise to support its commercial growth plans through this state-of-the-art facility.
The partnership between Stellantis and Archer dates back to 2020, with Stellantis becoming an investor in 2021. Since then, Archer has utilized Stellantis' comprehensive manufacturing, supply chain, and design expertise to drive the design, development, and commercialization of its eVTOL aircraft. Carlos Tavares, Stellantis CEO, lauded the teams' efforts, stating, "The innovative approaches, expertise, and hard work of the Stellantis and Archer engineering and production teams are commendable. With this additional investment, we are propelling today's mobility freedom towards a future that extends beyond the roads." Archer CEO Adam Goldstein shared his vision, adding, "Together, we are redefining urban mobility, providing new opportunities by enhancing access to people, places, and events for residents around the world."
This substantial investment underlines Stellantis' commitment to pioneering mobility solutions and solidifies its role in advancing Archer's mission to transform urban air mobility. The collaboration continues to push the boundaries of innovation, setting the stage for a future where urban mobility is more efficient and accessible.
