In a significant move within the European venture capital landscape, the SmartCap Venture Capital Fund has invested €5 million in Antler‘s Nordic Fund II. This fund has already garnered anchor investments from the Export and Investment Fund of Denmark (EIFO) and Tesi from Finland. Recently, EIFO supported Danish startups Kvantify and EvodiaBio, highlighting its commitment to fostering innovation in the region.
This is the second Nordic-focused fund launched by Antler, following the successful debut of their first €30 million fund in 2021. Nordic Fund II aims to further solidify Antler‘s presence in the Nordic region by focusing on early-stage startups and innovative technology investment strategies. The fund primarily targets Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, and is now expanding into the Estonian market.
SmartCap board member and fund manager Sille Pettai commented on the investment, saying, “This investment is a great opportunity to join forces with TESI, EIFO, and Investinor and create cross-border deal flow across the Nordics and Estonia. Active deal-flow generation and team building are crucial for our current market development stage, as we are witnessing new talented tech executives with founder potential growing out of our startup scene. It’s great to see that Antler aims to extend its innovative model to Estonia, by putting a new generation of Estonian founders on its radar and opening the Nordic program for them.”
The Antler operating model involves a 12-week accelerator residency, where participants form teams and establish startups. Successful teams emerging from this residency receive an investment of up to €300K to propel their startups to the next stage. Jussi Kallasvuo, Partner at Antler, stated, “Estonia has consolidated its position as one of the most exciting tech ecosystems in Europe. It has produced some of Europe’s fastest-growing tech companies, and Tallinn is home to more unicorn founders than established tech hubs like Manchester, Madrid, and Copenhagen. Antler is a global investor committed to supporting the best founders around the world, and we are very excited to work with SmartCap to back a new generation of Estonian tech startups.”
Enni Rautio, Investment Director at Tesi‘s fund investments team, emphasized the unique operating model of the new fund manager, which develops and diversifies the local startup ecosystem. Rautio added, “As Antler also actively advances sustainability in its portfolio, we are pleased to be able to bring a new player to the Finnish venture capital market.”
Antler has demonstrated remarkable resilience in the face of economic downturns, making 140 investments in 2023 alone. This places Antler among the few early-stage VC firms that have managed to increase their rate of investment during challenging times. Antler is also actively working to remove barriers to entrepreneurship and is committed to supporting a new generation of diverse founders. According to the company, one-third of Antler‘s portfolio companies have at least one female founder, and globally, founders supported by Antler represent 145 nationalities.
The expansion into the Estonian market marks a significant step for Antler, as it seeks to tap into the region’s burgeoning tech talent. Estonia has become a notable hub for tech innovation, producing a number of fast-growing companies and boasting a high concentration of unicorn founders. The strategic partnership with SmartCap and other Nordic investors will likely enhance Antler‘s ability to identify and support promising startups across the region, fostering cross-border collaboration and innovation.
As the Nordic Fund II progresses, it will continue to build on the success of its predecessor, driving forward Antler‘s mission to support early-stage startups and innovative technologies. The commitment from SmartCap and other investors underscores the confidence in Antler‘s approach and the potential of the Nordic and Estonian tech ecosystems. With a focus on sustainability and diversity, Antler is well-positioned to make a significant impact in the venture capital landscape, both regionally and globally.
