The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled the nominees for the 97th Academy Awards on Thursday morning, marking the beginning of Hollywood's most prestigious race. The announcement, presented by Bowen Yang and Rachel Sennott, set the stage for the ceremony scheduled for March 2.

Leading the nominations was "Emilia Perez", a non-English musical that secured 13 nods, breaking new ground in the category. Following closely were "The Brutalist" and "Wicked", each receiving 10 nominations. These films, alongside other contenders, highlight a diverse array of storytelling and cinematic innovation that has shaped the past year in film.

"Emilia Perez", despite its controversies surrounding representation and linguistic choices, has garnered critical and audience recognition. With four wins at the Golden Globes, the film has managed to resonate deeply, particularly as a non-English language production achieving historical milestones. Its lead, Karla Sofia Gascon, is nominated for Best Actress, further solidifying the film’s success.

"The Brutalist", directed by Brady Corbet, is another frontrunner this year. The film narrates the journey of Hungarian refugees in post-World War II America, starring Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones. Despite discussions surrounding its use of artificial intelligence in production, the film has earned acclaim, especially in the Best Picture and Best Director categories.

On the other hand, "Wicked", a blockbuster adaptation of the beloved musical, received recognition in several major categories, including Best Picture and acting nominations for Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. If Erivo wins, she will join the rare group of artists with EGOT status, having previously won Emmy, Grammy, and Tony awards.

This year’s acting nominations were dominated by fresh faces, with 13 first-time nominees across the categories. Notable names include Demi Moore in "The Substance", Kieran Culkin in "A Real Pain", and Zoe Saldana in "Emilia Perez", reflecting a strong mix of established talent and emerging stars.

The 2025 Oscars also mark the first time since 1968 that two musicals—"Wicked" and "Emilia Perez"—have been nominated in the Best Picture category. Other films competing in this prestigious category include "Dune: Part Two", "Anora", and "A Complete Unknown".

Comedian Conan O’Brien will host the ceremony, airing live on ABC. As anticipation builds, these nominations promise a competitive and memorable awards season.
