Opel recently celebrated its 125th anniversary of automotive production at its headquarters in Russelsheim, Germany. The event, held under the motto "Always Forward Since 1899," was a significant milestone for the company, reflecting its long history and commitment to innovation.
The celebration took place at Adam Opel Haus, with notable attendees including German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Hesse State Premier Boris Rhein, Stellantis Chairman John Elkann, Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares, and Stellantis Chief Human Resources & Transformation Officer and Opel Supervisory Board Chairman Xavier Chereau. These distinguished guests joined Opel CEO Florian Huettl to tour the facility, including the production sites for the Opel Astra and the DS Automobiles DS4.
During the event, Opel CEO Florian Huettl expressed pride in the company's history and its future direction. "In 2024, we will become the first German brand to offer an electric version of every model in our portfolio," Huettl stated. "With 125 years of automotive production experience, our employees and I are advancing electrification with conviction and pride. Additionally, we continue to invest in the well-being of our employees with the new carbon-neutral grEEn-campus being built in Russelsheim."
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasized Opel's significant role in the automotive industry's shift towards electric mobility. "Since cars started playing a crucial role in our society, meticulous work has been done here to make them even better," Scholz said. "Generations of workers have turned Opel into the major brand it is today. You are once again moving fearlessly and confidently into the future, which is exemplary."
Hesse State Premier Boris Rhein highlighted the strategic importance of the automotive industry to both Germany and Hesse. "We support the sector's production transformation, focusing on key technologies such as autonomous driving, hybrid technology, lightweight construction, and battery technology," Rhein noted. "Openness to technology will propel us forward. I sincerely congratulate Opel on its innovative approach and the joy of driving it has offered for 125 years."
During the tour, Xavier Chereau discussed the details of the grEEn-campus project. This future facility, set to become the new Stellantis Germany headquarters and the global Opel center in Russelsheim, will significantly reduce the city's carbon footprint. The entire building's electricity needs will be met by solar energy generated from approximately 7,000 panels on its roof, enabling the office complex to operate climate-neutrally.
The 125th anniversary celebrations also saw the public debut of the new Opel Frontera and Opel Grandland models. These additions mark Opel's commitment to electrification, as the brand plans to launch an electric version of every model in its portfolio by 2024. By 2025, every new Opel model introduced in Europe will have a fully electric version.
Thousands of visitors participated in the Open Day event, enjoying various programs around Adam Opel Haus. A special anniversary exhibition showcased Opel's milestones in the automotive industry over the past 125 years. The Opel Design Center, celebrating its 60th anniversary, opened its doors to visitors, presenting groundbreaking concept cars from the past to the present.
