Previously, it was reported that Microsoft had entered into a partnership with Mistral, intending to offer Mistral's products through its Azure cloud computing platform. As part of this partnership, Microsoft had invested €15 million in Mistral in February. However, it is noteworthy that Microsoft did not participate in this latest funding round.

In 2023, Mistral had raised €385 million at a valuation of $2 billion, led by Andreessen Horowitz and Lightspeed Venture Partners. According to information shared by Financial Times, Mistral's recent investment includes €468 million in equity and €132 million in debt. Sources close to the company indicate that with this new investment, Mistral's valuation stands at €5.8 billion. The latest funding has tripled the company's value since December. Prior to this round, the total investment in the company was approximately €505 million.

Mistral's CEO, Arthur Mensch, stated that the company is capable of training its AI systems using around a thousand high-powered chips. Mensch explained that Mistral spends only a few dozen million euros to develop products that can compete with models built by OpenAI, Google, and Meta, which utilize much larger budgets. This efficiency likely enhances Mistral's attractiveness to investors. Jeannette zu Fürstenberg, who manages General Catalyst's European operations, praised the company’s capital efficiency.

Operating with a team of 60, Mistral dedicates approximately three-quarters of its staff to product development and research. The company distinguishes itself from OpenAI by releasing most of its AI systems as open source. This approach appeals to corporate clients who prioritize data privacy or prefer not to rely on a US-based provider. Mistral recently gained attention with its large language model Codestral, which focuses on coding tasks. Following this significant investment, it is likely that Mistral will introduce new and more competitive models.

This substantial investment will enable Mistral to accelerate its work in artificial intelligence and strengthen its position in the industry. The developments and innovative models that Mistral is expected to release in the future are highly anticipated by the market.
