Renowned singer Halsey has returned with a new single, "The End," shedding light on her prolonged health struggles. In a series of Instagram posts, the artist, who uses she/they pronouns, shared the story behind her new album and the challenging health journey that inspired it.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, Halsey wrote, "Long story short, I'm lucky to be alive. Short story short, I wrote an album. It begins with 'The End.'" The accompanying videos show the singer receiving medical infusions and documenting her hospital visits. Although the specific diagnosis remains undisclosed, Halsey tagged the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the Lupus Research Alliance, hinting at the nature of her health issues.
The 29-year-old artist expressed her determination and hope in the post, stating, "I feel like an old lady. I told myself I'm giving myself two more years to be sick. At 30, I’m having a rebirth and I'm not gonna be sick, and I’m gonna look super hot and have so much energy and just get to re-do my twenties in my thirties."
Produced by Halsey along with Michael Uzowuru and Alex G, the new single "The End" details the singer's yearslong battle with various health conditions. In the song, Halsey sings, "Every couple of years now, a doctor says I'm sick / Pulls out a brand new bag of tricks / And then they lay it on me / And at first, it was my brain, then a skeleton in pain / And I don't like to complain, but I'm saying sorry."
In the outro of "The End," the three-time Grammy nominee reflects on her journey: "When I met you, I said I would never die / But the joke was always mine 'cause I'm racing against time / And I know it's not the end of the world, but could you pick me up at 8? / 'Cause my treatment starts today."
Halsey previously opened up about her health struggles. In May 2022, she shared her experiences with seeing numerous doctors before receiving diagnoses for Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, Sjogren's syndrome, mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS), and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS). In a series of Instagram Story videos, she mentioned how her health had changed significantly after giving birth.
The new single marks a significant comeback for Halsey, whose last album, "If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power," was released in 2021. The album, which was nominated for a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album, explored the challenges and joys of childbirth. In 2021, Halsey welcomed a son with her ex-partner, screenwriter Alev Aydin.
By revealing her health battles through "The End," Halsey continues to inspire and connect with her fans, offering a raw and powerful glimpse into her life.
