The acquisition comes after over a year of collaboration between Duolingo and Hobbes, during which the studio contributed to several key projects. These included the development of Duolingo Music, as well as various animation design systems and product architectures. With the completion of the deal, Hobbes' team of 12 designers, motion animators, creative strategists, creative directors, and producers will join Duolingo full-time. This move will establish the company’s first dedicated motion design team.
The team will continue to operate out of their Detroit office, which is conveniently located across the hall from Duolingo’s own Detroit office. This arrangement effectively doubles the size of Duolingo's Detroit presence. While the financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed, it was revealed that the deal involved a combination of cash and equity awards for the team. Duolingo described the transaction to TechCrunch as primarily an “acqui-hire.”
This acquisition follows a similar strategic move in 2022, when Duolingo acquired another Detroit-based studio, Gunner. Gunner was instrumental in enhancing the app’s game mechanics, making the learning experience more engaging and enjoyable. The focus on design and animation is central to Duolingo's strategy, transforming language and skill acquisition into a more gamified, less daunting task.
Ryan Sims, Duolingo’s Chief Design Officer, highlighted the importance of design in the company's success. He stated, “Design is a critical part of Duolingo's success, particularly our use of character illustration and animation, which really accelerated since adding Gunner to our team. Now we’ll be able to accelerate our use of motion-design by adding Hobbes’ unique talents to our design team.” He further emphasized the company’s belief that a more animated product experience not only enhances enjoyment but also leads to better learning outcomes.
