CargoBeamer Secures €65M to Expand Rail Freight Network Across Europe

Leipzig-based CargoBeamer, a German logistics and intermodal terminal operator, has received up to €65 million in equity and debt financing from Orion Infrastructure Capital (OIC). The funding aims to support the company’s efforts to expand its road-to-rail freight transport solutions and address Europe’s environmental and logistical challenges.

This investment comes after a €50 million contribution from an existing shareholder and €90 million in grants from the German and Swiss transport authorities in 2024. Over the past year, CargoBeamer has secured €205 million to accelerate the development of its intermodal network, which focuses on shifting freight traffic from highways to railways.

Jeremy Glick, Investment Partner and Head of Infra Growth at OIC, emphasized that CargoBeamer’s proprietary technology will be central to advancing the transition from road to rail, aligning with their vision to create “cost-advantaged logistics solutions that also enhance decarbonisation efforts.” He also stated confidence in the company’s ability to drive the modal shift through its innovative intermodal terminals.

The financing round was advised exclusively by Ancoris Capital Partners, a New York-based investment bank specializing in infrastructure and growth projects.

Automated Logistics Solutions to Reduce Emissions and Speed Up Transport

CargoBeamer operates in the “combined transportation road-rail segment” by offering automated systems that transfer semi-trailers onto freight trains in just 20 minutes. This process is nine times faster than conventional crane terminals, helping reduce delays in logistics. The company currently operates terminals in Germany, Italy, and France, and its technology plays a crucial role in lowering carbon emissions by 85% compared to diesel-based trucking.

Its logistics ecosystem includes patented wagons, transshipment terminals, and advanced software, enabling non-craneable semi-trailers to be transported by rail. As Europe continues to face truck driver shortages and highway congestion, CargoBeamer’s services aim to ease the burden on overland transport while offering a more sustainable alternative.

New Terminal Construction Set for Completion by 2026

With the newly acquired capital, CargoBeamer plans to build two additional terminals in Kaldenkirchen, Germany, and Domodossola, Italy. Construction is expected to start in 2025 and conclude by 2026. These terminals will join the company’s first facility in Calais, France, which began operations in 2021, enhancing the intermodal freight network across Europe’s key logistics corridors.

Nicolas Albrecht, CEO of CargoBeamer, remarked that the partnership with OIC is a significant milestone in positioning the company as a leader in intermodal freight transport. “From the first day, OIC has proven to be a visionary partner dedicated to helping to realise state-of-the-art infrastructure that allows to decarbonise land-based transportation in Europe,” Albrecht said.

He also highlighted the strategic placement of the Kaldenkirchen and Domodossola terminals along Europe’s busiest intermodal corridor, emphasizing that their high-frequency rail connections will be crucial in scaling the shift from road to rail.
