BYD, one of China's dominant players in the electric vehicle sector, officially introduced its two new flagship models — the Han L sedan and the Tang L SUV — during a global event held on April 9. The announcement followed a teaser video released on April 6, which offered the first look at the updated design language and performance targets of the new models. The company has described the pair as part of a strategy to “redefine the high-end smart EV experience,” underlining a broader push to enter the upper tier of the electric mobility market.
1000V platform and ultra-fast charging stand out
According to BYD, both models are built on a newly developed 1000V high-voltage architecture, marking a shift in the company’s approach to power delivery and battery integration. Initial specifications point to impressive performance metrics, including acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just over 2 seconds. The platform also supports a fast-charging capability that enables a 400-kilometer range addition in only 5 minutes, placing BYD in direct competition with top-tier global EV manufacturers.
Dual flagship models in Dynasty and Warship series
The Han L and Tang L are jointly described by the company as a “Double Flagship,” and will serve as the new benchmark for BYD’s Dynasty and Warship EV lineups. Features shown in the teaser include an “intelligent body control system,” hinting at advanced active suspension technologies. In addition, the mention of “ultra-high RPM” electric motors signals a focus on high-performance driving, previously limited to a narrower segment of supercar-like EVs.
Autonomous driving and smart cockpit upgrades anticipated
Both vehicles are expected to feature BYD’s latest autonomous driving package, the DiPilot suite. The cockpit environment is also set for an overhaul, with industry sources suggesting possible collaborations with NVIDIA or Huawei to integrate AI-driven infotainment systems. Although full technical details remain undisclosed, rumors indicate the adoption of an updated Blade Battery design that enhances thermal management and durability.
Pricing and global ambitions
Pre-sale listings for the two models have already gone live on major Chinese EV platforms. The Han L is priced at approximately ¥270,000 (around $37,300), while the Tang L is listed at about ¥360,000 (roughly $49,700). This pricing positions both vehicles in the same category as Tesla’s Model S and Model X, with BYD clearly targeting a slice of the global high-performance EV market.
As BYD accelerates its international expansion — recently entering markets like the UK, Thailand, and Mexico — the launch of the Han L and Tang L could mark a pivotal move in its efforts to compete on a broader stage.
