Bolt enters Denmark's ride-hailing market with Viggo acquisition
Estonia-based Bolt has acquired Danish EV taxi platform Viggo, marking the company’s first acquisition since its founding 12 years ago.

Bolt, the shared mobility company headquartered in Tallinn, has completed the acquisition of Viggo, a ride-hailing company operating in Copenhagen and Aarhus with an all-electric vehicle fleet. This strategic move brings Bolt’s ride-hailing operations to Denmark for the first time, expanding its service portfolio beyond the e-bike rentals it already offers in the country. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
First acquisition in Bolt's 12-year history
Founded in 2013 by Markus Villig, Bolt has grown from a ride-hailing startup to a major mobility provider with services in more than 600 cities across 50 countries. The company operates ride-hailing, scooter and e-bike rentals, car-sharing, and food and grocery delivery services. Until now, Bolt had expanded organically, making this acquisition of Viggo its first since inception. According to Villig, the company has “always had a high bar for M&A” but was drawn to Viggo’s mission and its fully electric operations. He added that the deal positions Bolt as “the largest ride-hailing operator in Denmark.”
Viggo brings fully electric fleet and local presence
Established in 2019, Viggo runs a fleet of more than 300 electric vehicles and serves over 450,000 users through its operations in Copenhagen and Aarhus. With a network of over 500 drivers, Viggo has focused on combining sustainability with high service standards. Kenneth Herschel, CEO of Viggo, said the company was built to deliver “a high-quality, sustainable taxi experience” and that the partnership with Bolt would allow them to scale their impact through access to more technology and demand.
Strategic partnership adds more vehicles to the platform
In addition to acquiring Viggo, Bolt announced a partnership with local Danish taxi company Taxi 4×27. The collaboration will integrate Taxi 4×27’s fleet of over 600 vehicles into the Bolt platform, significantly boosting Bolt’s reach in the country. The addition of Taxi 4×27’s vehicles and drivers creates a more robust mobility network, complementing Bolt’s existing e-bike rental services.
Building a multi-modal ecosystem in Denmark
With this expansion, Bolt is creating a more connected transportation ecosystem in Denmark, offering users multiple mobility options depending on their journey needs. The company continues to focus on encouraging the shift from privately owned vehicles to shared, electric alternatives. Bolt reports that more than 200 million customers have used its services to date, with over 4.5 million drivers registered on its platform worldwide. By integrating Viggo and partnering with Taxi 4×27, Bolt strengthens its footprint in Scandinavia while reinforcing its commitment to sustainable urban mobility.
